Public order more important than Guinea poll date – PM

CONAKRY (Reuters) – Guinea’s prime minister said on Monday that maintaining public order was more important than holding a planned September 19 presidential election on time, but stopped short of announcing a delay in the poll.

“The priority must be given to public order as an election is not possible if there is chaos,” Prime Minister Jean Marie Dore said on state television after meeting Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Conde, who are due to face each other in a run-off.

The pair were summoned to meet the prime minister after a weekend of clashes between their supporters killed one and injured 50 others in the capital, Conakry.
