APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Jean Ping, on Friday called for calm and restraint pending the announcement of the results of the first round of the presidential election in Guinea, due to be released on Friday.
Guinea’s first free and fair elections since independence more than 50 years ago, the weekend, was said to be quite democrat and peaceful.
”The President of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, welcomes the peaceful presidential election held on June 27, 2010 in Guinea, and notes with satisfaction the positive assessment made by the various election observer missions,” said the AU.
Ping also invited all parties in Guinea to preserve the climate of peace, security and serenity that prevails in the country for the restoration of constitutional order.
Ping further calls on the actors, particularly the leaders of political parties, activists and their supporters and candidates in the presidential election, to be committed to democratic values, for which they have made so many sacrifices which postulate the acceptance of the election results by all.
