CONAKRY, Guinea — Officials in Guinea say clashes have broken out between supporters of rival political parties just days before the country’s first free elections, leaving four dead and dozens injured.
Top opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo says supporters loyal to rival Sidya Toure stoned his convoy as it passed through several towns north of the capital during last-minute campaigning ahead of Sunday’s vote.
Toure, however, issued a statement saying his supporters had nothing to do with the violence on Thursday. He calls the attackers “bandits” who wore T-shirts bearing his image “to soil my party.”
Suana Dore, a reporter for the local Lynx newspaper, says 30 were injured by stone-throwing militants during a skirmish in Coyah, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Conakry. State radio and a doctor at a morgue in the nearby town of Donka say four people were killed, all supporters of Diallo.
